Listen up, Dexter fans! This week on the show, you’re in for a massive treat as composer Daniel Licht submits to a full scale Rue Morgue Podcast interrogation.

We delve into all the nooks and crannies of how he manages to concoct some of the most mesmerizing and infectious music cues ever devised for a television series.

And for Dexter fans in L.A., June 10th will seem like Christmas because Mr. Licht will be performing selections from the show using a musical palette of classical orchestrations combined with unusual sound elements.

Dan creates the score by blending the sound of wine glasses, duct tap, surgical tools, metal saws and scalpels with bone percussion instruments, word rhythm instruments and traditional instruments played in conventional and unconventional ways; all of these elements will be incorporated into the performance.

The concert will be introduced by Michael C. Hall. Also featured will be composer Rolfe Kent with performances of his iconic main title theme and other scores. Other highlights include the premier of Dan’s music from the upcoming video game Silent Hill- Book of Memories, performed by the Silent Hill series’ vocalist Mary Elizabeth McGlynn.

  1. Feedback says:

I have to say, this is one of my personal favourite episodes of the Rue Morgue Podcast to date especially in terms of working in all the brilliant Dan Licht cues from DEXTER. I love that stuff!

  2. phil says:

Great show FB. For me it shined new like on the Dexter music. Thanks

  3. Dark Mark says:

An outstanding episode Stuart. I enjoyed every minute of this rare insight into the creative process of a man whose talents are obvious. One of my favourite aspects of the series (it ticks every box for excellence) is the music which conveys and adds so much atmosphere and emotion to the show.
I listened to this twice in a row and I think it is one of the best interviews you have conducted.

  4. FDBK says:

    Thank you, Dahk Mahk!

As stated, it’s a personal fav of mine as well.

I’m gonna do more music-oriented shows. I’ve got one in the planning stages and if it comes off, it should be terrific.

  5. Mike Tank says:

Man…I LOVED this episode! The music for this show is absolutely terrific. It really is consistently one of the best scores on episodic television.

Hearing Mr. Licht play some of his music for you right then and there was a treat, as well. You were right when you said that no matter what the scene may entail, whether it’s some of the darker, more horrific elements of the show or the macabre, tongue-in-cheek humor that it does so well, Licht brilliantly keeps the tone of the music very off-kilter and Dexter-centric, making you always feel like you’re experiencing exactly what he and his “dark passenger” are thinking and feeling at any given moment.

And hearing all of these great cues just made me realize how much I miss the show and wish that Season 7 would start already!

    Great interview, Feedback. As usual.

  6. FDBK says:

You know what? Home Video box sets have ruined me for episodic television. I can’t handle waiting a week for the next episode. I’d rather wait until I get my hands on a DVD and then monster the whole thing in a couple of sittings.

Dexter’s like crack. You can’t do just one – you have to keep hitting that pipe until it’s all gone and even then, it’ll have you crawling around on the floor through the carpet fibres looking for spilt crumbs.

  7. Feedback says:

If anyone who downloaded this plans to listen again, you may want to grab the new file. The levels have been slightly adjusted to make it more ‘iPod’ friendly.
