RUE MORGUE RADIO: FINAL TRANSMISSION

on January 30, 2012 | 45 Comments

Well my friends and fiends, after more than seven years of disseminating Horror Rot ‘n’ Roll and Caustic Film Criticism over the cyberwaves, it’s time to bid farewell to RUE MORGUE RADIO.

But have no fear, we did not go gently into that good night. We raged, raged against the dying of the light with this: a two hour, double whammy FINAL TRANSMISSION!

Hear Tomb Dragomir’s ramblings on David Lynch’s CRAZY CLOWN TIME!

Thrill to the Caustic Critics pontifications on RATLINE starring Emily Haack and Jason Christ, directed by Eric Stanze!

Plus, some final words from Shannon, a last blast of Terror Tunes by Tomb and a supersonic giveaway to end all supersonic giveaways!

So on behalf of everyone at Rue Morgue Radio, I wanna thank all the folks at RUE MORGUE MAGAZINE for making it possible for us to do this show over the last seven plus years, especially Monica and Justin who’ve worked hard behind the scenes every week.

Also, a big thanks to all my former Caustic Critics combatants (there’s been about 16 of them in total), especially Chris Alexander who was as much a part of establishing Rue Morgue Radio as anyone else and the Gore-Met for stepping in to fill a void following his departure.

But most importantly, I wanna thank the loyal fans of RUE MORGUE RADIO who’ve tuned in every week, some from the very beginning. It’s been your support and enthusiasm that has allowed us to remain on the weird wide web all this time. We’d often get letters thanking us for helping some of you get through a long drive, a long day at work or even just an otherwise bleak scenario (I know that in Owen Garth’s case, he likes to put the show on in the background while he preps his victims for the deep freeze).

Those little comments have gone a LONG way to keeping us enthused about doing this. And over the years, we’ve made cyber friends with some of you and met others at the Festival of Fear and it feels like we’ve gotten to know a few of you a little bit.

And of course, to those who voted for us in the Rondo Hatton Horror Awards, we are perpetually in your debt. And I mean that literally because I bribed many of you personally. Don’t worry, I’ll get those cheques out immediately! (Cheques will not be honoured.)

But while RUE MORGUE RADIO may be disintegrating, we’re not vanishing entirely from Cyber Hell. Sir Tomb will be back soon with his own horror music podcast and you can viddy his whacked out, mental shenanigans on TOMB TV.

And even though it’s RUST IN PEACE for the Caustic Critics, Lance and I will continue making the odd appearance on the RUE MORGUE PODCAST.

So no tears please! It’s a waste of good suffering.

Anyway, without any further ado, I present for your slooshying agony, the grand finale to end all grand finales: RUE MORGUE RADIO: FINAL TRANSMISSION.

Responses to RUE MORGUE RADIO: FINAL TRANSMISSION

  1. such sad news, it was great while it lasted though, loved listening to the new radio shows each and every friday, what a bummer, I hope to be able to keep in touch with all the awesome folks that made the radio show possible, thank you very much for all your hard work and effort, it was a blast listening to it! Keep on rocking folks!

  2. Scurrilous von Grotesque says:

From someone whom has been a dedicated listener from the early days of the show, I want to say that RMR and the personalities attached will be sorely missed. I make a bi-weekly 3 hour commute and for the last 4 years RMR has been my soundtrack for this long, often arduous tri-state trek. RMR is the sole reason I purchased an iPod. I hope that the RM Podcast will continue on, thanks for all the great memories and for helping me stay awake on those long drives…

  3. The Abominable Phibes says:

Thank you for everything. The show has meant a lot to me.

  4. Izzy says:

WHY, GOD, WHY!?! I LOVE RMR!

  5. Blood Soldier says:

    Maggot spit!!!
RMR is the sole reason I discovered Rue Morgue :( I’m not sure if I’ll stick around.

Getting rid of it is a real burn to all including Rue Morgue. I hope the consequence of this action has been deeply considered. Its truly a shame it won’t continue.

    Ce la mort. Go Tomb!

  6. Chris McMillan says:

The weekends won’t feel quite right without RMR. Goodbye and my thanks to everyone involved. RMR was the first podcast I’d ever listened to and will be sorely missed.

  7. Colum says:

    Its so sad. So sad.

  8. Andrew says:

Rue Morgue Radio has been totally kickass! Sorry to see it go. Thank you for doing it in the first place!!!

  9. Nick English says:

Why did RMR have to go, and will the podcasts continue with the same regularity? More? Less?

  10. warmsoda says:

It’s a shame RMR is no more, it certainly played a large role in rekindling my interest in Rue Morgue proper.

I echo the sentiments of others here and on facebook in hoping this doesn’t reflect on the future of the Rue Morgue Podcast. It’d be nice to have the Caustic Critics a semi-regular feature of the podcast.

I also hope that Tomb’s music-oriented podcast has some official presence here on RM.

Thank you to everyone involved over the years, thanks for all the effort put into each show, and thanks for all the years of service.

  11. Incredibly sad to see this happen. Thank you to all involved for making my weekends just a little bit spookier.

  12. Feedback says:

Sorry to have been the bearer of bad news. The podcast will continue and Tomb will be back with his own horror rot n roll themed radio show in the near future.

When it hits, I’ll be sure to scream about it from the rooftops of the world.

But thanks once again to you guys for listening to us all these years! Like I mentioned on here, it’s your enthusiasm for the show that allowed us to continue with it as long as we did! So mucho grassy arse, amigos!

  13. Evil_Otto says:

Sweet merciful fuck, this sucks. First the forum and now this…I think I’m going to be sick…blearggghghghhghhghhgh!

    Seriously though, I’m absolutely gutted.

Thanks for the all those great shows, amigos.

  14. SinisterSideShowSid says:

Wow I can’t believe it I refuse to accept it why just why are you going off the air?… Seriously why? rmr was the first podcast I ever heard myself and rm magazine is a favorite of mine I am deeply sadened to hear this news truly deeply sadened I feel as though my throat has been deeply slashed with a dull steak knife I will miss listening to feedback and the rest of the Rue-morgue cast

  15. Feedback says:

Wow. I’ve seen some interesting reactions to this news but this is my favourite.

I imagine that slashing ones throat deeply with a dull steak knife would most definitely inspire a certain level of ‘deep sadness’ to say the very least!

But just in case you aren’t being cartoonishly over-dramatic, Sinister Sideshow Sid…..please don’t think of trying that at home! ;)

  16. Nick English says:

Perhaps the most important question: Will Lance still be joining you on podcasts? I think you guys make a really great team.

  17. Feedback says:

Will Lance still be joining you on podcasts?

I hope he will. We’ll definitely drag him back for the RMR results show but I’m hoping to keep the whole POST APOCALYPSE thing going.

Here’s the thing on that and I mentioned this to Lance as well. When we record some of these shows, it’s never as smooth or as straight forward as it often sounds in the final edit. For every edit that IS obvious, there may be two dozen that aren’t.

And the POST APOCALYPSE shows are no exception. So often when I record these things, the edit hangs over me like a date with doom!

Of course, it’s not that bad because I enjoy doing this work but sometimes I have to steel my nerves to dig in.

For instance, the DAVID HESS podcast took me an entire NIGHT to edit, probably about 8-10 hours. And despite what people may think, I HATE the sound of my own voice so it’s a bit masochistic on my part to do this work but that’s the way it goes.

But the exception is, when I record these POST APOCALYPSE segments with Lance, I can’t fucking WAIT to dig into the editing.

It’s so much fun. He has such great timing and we play off each other really well. It’s a real pleasure to craft those shows. And I especially enjoy the stuff that HAS to hit the cutting room floor. It’s insane. The man should be locked away for life.

So yes. Hopefully, I can wrangle LANCE out for more of these.

But as for the CAUSTIC CRITICS, I think it should retire with RMR as it wasn’t just me and Lance, it was me, Lance and TOMB!

There were three of us in the mix and it wouldn’t be the same with the mental audio stylings of Mr. Dragomir. Plus, the tone and style of the Caustic Critics just fit perfectly with the RMR format.

So I think it’s time to say BON VOYAGE to the Caustic Critics.

HOWEVER – There is room on the PODCAST to review films, for sure. But I would prefer to do more intensive examinations of movies and bring on other guests as well (more along the lines of what I did with Charlie on the DEVIL’S REJECTS).

Anyway, I got a bunch of interesting ideas for the podcast but for February I’m gonna see how the dust settles on the whole RMR situation and regroup accordingly.

But keep your ears peeled to the podcast coz we got some fucking KILLER stuff in the works.

    R.I.P. CAUSTIC CRITICS. (2005-2012).

  18. Dark Mark says:

Whatever you do, I’ll be listening.

  19. smallerdemon says:

When I saw it come through I had no idea it was the last one, but it only took less than a minute of listening to realize the sad fate that awaited me. Sad but also enjoyable, as the last show really pulled out a lot of great stops for music and sound bites.

I am incredibly saddened as a mid-40s something horror fan at the loss of my only real place to discover new music. And not only new music, but to hear interviews with not only musicians but also composers for the horror genre.

In fact, I discovered Rue Morgue Radio during a search for more music from François-Eudes Chanfrault, composer of the score music for HAUTE TENSION and INSIDE. To hear an interview with him at the time was astounding fun and to know that there was someone out there dedicating time and effort to music from horror was heartening. It is a sad, sad day to say Goodbye™ to Rue Morgue Radio.

    Cthuluspeed to all.

  20. Tomb Dragomir says:

Thanks for all the well wishes and vitriol my good fiends! I’ll be debuting a new horror radio show in the coming months, TOMBDRAGOMIR.COM is coming soon and you can still watch Tomb TV at http://www.youtube/TombDragomir

A new episode of Tomb TV goes live tonight, Friday Feb 3rd! Tune In, OR ELSE!

  21. Mike Tank says:

I know I seem like a major dweeb for still harping on this, but I’m still really feeling the loss of the show.

I always took it for granted that there was always going to be another freaky Friday night with Tomb, Liisa, Feedback and Lance just around the corner.

I feel like Liotta at the end of GOODFELLAS…”And now, it’s all over.”

    http://youtu.be/i28UEoLXVFQ

  22. Feedback says:

Nah….you’re not being a dweeb for this. (You’re a dweeb for other reasons but not for this!)

I can relate. One of my all time favourite radio shows was JONESY’S JUKEBOX JURY on Indie 103 in L.A.

It was hosted by the one and only Steve Jones from the PISTOLS. It was fucking brilliant!

But even though he was doing it for years, I came to the party late. Anyway, I was digging the show for about two years, podcasting loads of episodes and then one day, INDIE 103 changed to an internet only station and the LA airwaves lost Steve Jones and I lost one of the best podcasts on my Chonepod.

I was gutted. I’ve never quite recovered.

So I can fully relate about what it’s like to lose a favourite radio show. It really is the most intimate of mediums. You feel like you get to know the hosts….etc even if you never talk to them. In your case, you actually have gotten to know some of us – or at least me – but you form that relationship with your favourite radio hosts regardless.

But while it’s sad that RMR is no more, I’m honoured and I’m sure the rest of the RMR crew are (except for Lance) that you care enough about us to miss us!

Cheers, Tank. And thanks for all your support with the show.

  23. Mike Tank says:

“Nah….you’re not being a dweeb for this. (You’re a dweeb for other reasons but not for this!)”

Wow, you guys really HAVE gotten to know me! ;)

Seriously, thanks for the sentiments. When you dig something so much and make it such a part of your life in the way that I and many others have with RMR, it really is like losing a good friend.

But like others have said in the comments above, you know for sure I’ll be following you guys into whatever comes next.

So cheers back, Rue Crew! You guys are the best!

  25. Jeff Rego says:

I can’t believe I’m just catching up with this now. I’ve had the final episode downloaded, and have been waiting for the right opportunity (long drive, or stretch of desk-time at work, just as you said) to listen. Probably for the best that I’m “prepared” now — although, as a regular listener since late 2005, I am absolutely heartbroken. I can’t even count the number of great movies and bands I would never have checked out, sometimes never even heard of, if not for RMR. Meeting Stuart and Chris at FoF 2006 was one of the highlights of my first trip to Canada (and where you immortalized the voice of my then five-year-old son, “Alex from Massachusetts”); it was great to return in 2010, to see Stuart again and meet Liisa, Lance and Tomb. My heartfelt thanks to all of you for being so friendly and kind to me and my family. Please know that RMR was very much appreciated, and will be very sadly missed. There is one fewer reason to look forward to (every other) Friday now. I am glad at least to know that the Podcast will continue; I’ll be gratefully listening!

  26. Feedback says:

Thank you for those words, Jeff! I can’t believe it was so long ago when we recorded that i.d. with your little one.

Thanks for listening to us all these years!

    FDBK

  27. Curtis says:

Best of luck to all who made Rue Morgue Radio happen. I’m glad that the podcast will continue. Have you considered recruiting some volunteers to help edit the podcast? I’m sure there are people who want to get editing experience, and would love to be a part of the podcast.

  28. Feedback says:

I hope I didn’t give the impression that the editing was a chore for me. It’s not at all. But it’s like anything, it’s a big time commitment so that has to be contended with.

But it wouldn’t really work with another person editing it. First, I’d be surprised if someone would be willing to devote the required time but even if that was the case, the nature of the beast dictates that it’s something I have to do on my own.

Plus, I am impossible to please! ;)

    • Tomb Dragomir says:

“…it’s something I have to do on my own.
Plus, I am impossible to please! ”

      I can attest to that… ;)

  29. Joe Cole says:

Bummer, I also have been listening since I think 2005, and am sad to see it go, best podcast ever.

  30. KPR says:

Wow…..what a blow, I had no idea you were shutting down Rue Morgue Radio!!??

I mean, it was odd when you went bi-weekly, but OK, I thought. I didn’t consider that was a foreshadow of the death of RMR.

I can’t seem to find the reason to “why” ? It’s almost as if you are avoiding explaining why RMR getting shut down?

Maybe it was annouced in the magazine, or on farcebook, but could you please explain the “why” ?

I’ve loved this show for…I don’t know how many years, 6?? It was always a thrill to listen to on saturday morning, or when I was working the graveyard shift. RMR was my first podcast(“WTF is a podcast??) and was an amazing companion to the magazine. I think I have downloaded all of your shows, the only ones I am missing are the ones that don’t work….maybe I shouldn’t be complaining at this wake.

I know it is I who owe you guys for all the great times, and maybe I can one day repay you the laughs.

    You will be missed.

  31. Feedback says:

    Thank you, KPR.

As to the WHY, there hasn’t been an official explanation given because it’s a combination of factors.

Trevor, the associate editor of RM MAGAZINE shed some light on a recent messageboard post.

    http://rue-morgue.com/boards/showpost.php?p=534275&postcount=18

Also, when you said you downloaded all the shows except the ones that didn’t work, what did you mean?

Anyway, thanks for listening to us all these years. I’ve said it before but it was because of dedicated folks like you that kept us going as long as we did!

So no need to repay us. You already did! ;)

Anyway, you can still listen to plenty of my antics on the RUE MORGUE PODCAST and my own show CINEPHOBIA RADIO.

    http://www.cinephobia-radio.com

And brace yourself for Tomb Dragomir’s brand new horror music radio show. I’ll post all about it when it emerges from the depths of his twisted brain.

  32. KPR says:

Yes sorry, what I meant was not all RMR files available for download from the RMR site have worked; and that I saved all that have worked.

As I recall, old shows were “not always willing to work”, when I went back to DL past them.

Yes, a bit clumsy said. But the streaming has always worked, the downloaded files: 9/10 have worked.

I’ll have to go and check now and see which of the podcasts I have, place these on a hard disk and store away for prosperity.

With no official explanation given, I guess it all comes down to money, too great a loss? Passion can only fuel for so long, but I wonder if you ever considered making only 1 show a month, or selling each show for $1 to cover costs?

I for one would have kept throwing money at the screen for your podcasts :)

Given the chance, I think the fans of Rue Morgue and RMR would have come to the rescue; if our aid could have helped.

I’ll keep listening to all the other shows RMR seems to have broken off to, and again, thanks for all the great shows.

  33. drp says:

I too would gladly pay a fee for this great show…

  34. Feedback says:

    Thanks for the offer fellas!

Problem is, we couldn’t really sell the shows because there’s so much content that isn’t ours – i.e. all the music….etc. It would be such an elaborate process to set it up properly and it would really stranglehold Tomb’s ability to program whatever he liked.

And anyway, it’s not really my place to discuss anything to do with RUE MORGUE RADIO’s financial situation. That’s not my department at all.

But as for the old shows, I believe they’re going to be made available in some fashion. We haven’t discussed the details yet but as soon as there’s a coherent plan, I will be sure to announce it far and wide.

  35. WandererRob says:

Wow, that sucks. Nothing like discovering an excellent internet radio show a month after it has ended. :/

I hope the archives will stay up a while because I’ve been streaming past episodes like a madman the past week or so.

Sorry I didn’t find it sooner!

  36. FDBK says:

WandererRob! Where have you been for the past seven years!

Anyway, the complete archives will eventually be available on the Rue Morgue Radio website. I’ll post some info here on the blog when plans for that come to fruition.

    Thanks for finding us (eventually.)

    • WandererRob says:

I was obviously I’ll informed. I’m still listening to old shows but am quickly closing in on the end. But at least I’ll have the April-December episodes to keep me entertaining as the haunt build gets under way.

It’s a great show! Sorry it had to end. I look forward to digging deeper in the archives when they’re posted.

I’ve added yourself and Tomb over on Facebook. Hopefully I can keep tabs on any new efforts you guys put forth.

  37. Amy says:

Hey Feedback, Lance, Tomb, Liisa, and Shannon,

My heart broke when I downloaded the recent RMR only to find it was a farewell episode. Unfortunately, the link you posted on this board on February 9th about why you pulled the plug is gone- I’m left speculating at why… why…

In any case, I had to move away from a place I loved a few years ago, and the Friday night train ride home with RMR and beer helped alleviate a lonely situation. I know I’ve never met you all, but I did feel like you were friends I could hang out with on Friday nights who told me about everything cool in horror. I’ve since moved on and am in a much better situation, but I’ve had RMR by my side the whole way. You and your show got me through some tough, tough times.

I wish you all the best with your future projects- indeed, I hope to see them. But know this: the world is WaY LeSs CoOl without RMR. I cannot tell you how sad I am to see this ending. Seriously.

Thanks, thanks, thanks. Thanks for everything.
    Amy-

P.S. I’m using my real first name so Feedback and Lance know that chicks dig RMR.

  38. Feedback says:

Amy! Thanks for this. I’m gonna read this on the next edition of the RUE MORGUE PODCAST and I won’t even let Lance make fun of it!

Thanks for being such a loyal listener and I’m happy we helped get you through some lonely times.

    FDBK

p.s. Don’t forget to check out the RUE MORGUE PODCAST, it’s the spoken word spinoff of Rue Morgue Radio.

    Here’s the latest episode:

  39. Roswellianism says:

I… I realize this whole thing is old news, but to me, it’s a sudden, shocking blow.

I’ve only just started reading RM in the last year or so. I picked up my first issue (the one where “My Bloody Valentine 3D” graced the cover) because my younger brother needed some horror-themed images for a collage he was assigned in class. I’d seen the magazine a few times on the racks at my girlfriend’s Barnes and Noble, but never thought about picking it up. As soon as I did, I realized this was not a magazine to be cut into pieces. This is something to be preserved and respected. Unlike Fangoria’s quick one to two page blurbs, RM delved deep into the history of projects, actors, and even people. That issue changed the way I saw horror films.

Unfortunately, I didn’t quite grasp the whole podcasting thing until a few months ago. I’d downloaded a few episodes of RMR, along with the “Hymns” albums, but podcasting wasn’t quite my thing. I listened to my MP3 player barely once or twice a day, depending on my work schedule, but then I got a desk job and needed something to wake me up and help me concentrate. Unfortunately, music was not the best, as it broke my concentration. Podcasts worked perfectly, the right level of multitasking concentration that spurred my work ethic. None of the ‘casts on the Zune network quite had the right style I was looking for…

And it hit me tonight: Rue Morgue Radio! I missed hearing Tomb’s dulcet tones, Feedback’s awesome interviews, the psychobilly/death metal/unclassifiable songs that had me tapping my toes or banging my head hours still after I listened to them. I punched in the URL… and found the latest episode was from the end of January. Streaming the episode brought on heartbreak as sound bites about “The end” filtered through my speakers. Here it was, the missing piece… And it’s over.

I’m mourning the loss of this wonderfully bizarre corner of the internet. And I’m kicking myself for not getting here sooner, for not realizing what an amazing show the fine folks at RM had crafted.

I barely knew you, Rue Morgue Radio. I’ll listen faithfully to your archives as well as the Rue Morgue Podcast, but I’ll forever miss that eclectic mix that brought a smile to my face.

    –Daniel P., aka Roswellianism
