Ready Freddy?: Robert Englund’s Q&A

on August 28, 2011 | 1 Comment

“It’s not my genitalia!” If those aren’t words to live by then we’re not sure what constitutes a motto. It’s also not a bad way to kick off a Q&A with Robert Englund (for the record Englund was talking about a sex scene that was added to the Eaten Alive Japanese cut). Perched on the back of his chair to get a better vantage point over the packed hall Englund managed to prove he is a scholar and (sometimes) a gentleman.

Robert Englund answers a fan's question.

On why he felt he needed to change his appearance when he arrived to audition for the role of Freddy: “I had hair like Peter Frampton.”

On how he was treated a tad differently than Heather Langenkamp and Johnny Depp (at the time both more than a decade his junior) on the set of A Nightmare on Elm St.: “They were getting fanned and pampered and I was getting smeared in K-Y Jelly.”

Moderator and RM's Editor-in-Chief Dave Alexander and Robert Englund.

On why he channeled this admitted jealously for the role of Freddy: “He [Freddy] doesn’t like youth because he never had it.”

When asked about his nightmares: “I sleep like a baby…or have old man stress dreams.”

After describing one of these anxiety nightmares in which he is cast in the Merchant of Venice but can’t find his script as he is about to go on stage, moderator and RM Editor-in-Chief Dave Alexander remarked he had the “soul of an actor” to which Englund replied: “Or I just have to go for a colonoscopy.”

On Freddy vs Jason: “It’s not a cash grab…it’s the ultimate male adolescent question.”

On watching James Whale’s Frankenstein (1931) as a child: “It freaked this cowboy out big time.”

When asked if there is any Freddy in him: “I’m a real cranky driver.”

"Sweet dreams." A fan's Festival of Fear spoils.
