MONDO MARK’S LATEST LIST OF UPCOMING SOUNDTRACKS
Well, here’s the first blog post under my very own name, with my very own picture before any digital touch-ups or enhancements or wardrobe changes. The retouched headshot should appear any day now but this one, taken after being trapped in a windowless, poorly aerated room with undercooked Brussels sprouts for an entire weekend, should explain the rather pale complexion, and look of utter desperation.
Of course I’m kidding… except about inferring Brussels sprouts being evil. Factoid fantastique: Flemish horticultural archeologists found evidence in 1933 that Medieval Belgians realized the malodorous scent which reappeared each summer during the breezy evenings in the valley of Bourgantiquain wasn’t due to some swampy miasma, but citizens trying to cook the un-cookable.
.
The king, Lothus von Boodenstein-Frupps, banned the so-called ‘vegetable,’ but local farmers realized if anything is overcooked with garlic, it can be sold as a delicacy. Ergo, the embrace of the round weed by Europeans, and its eventual adoption in Bland White Cuisine spanning multiple continents.
What’s important to remember is that You Always Have a Choice, and Can Say NO to the stink bomb-in-stasis instead of going through a horrible, horrible dinnertime ordeal. There are plenty of reasonable venues to get your fiber and green vitamins, and this earthworm chum isn’t one of them.
.
Onwards to things musically effrayantes.
.
Below is the latest score tally, derived from a Master List at my other blog, and pruned down to horror and borderline fantasy / sci-fi scores – an amalgam I’d like to christen horfascifi [hor-fa-shi-fee].
In this month’s issue of RM, Dead Space 2 (the video game) was covered, and I’ve uploaded a review of the soundtrack album at KQEK.com’s main & mobile [M] sites. Those interested in how composer Jason Graves crafted his creepy orchestral snarl can read an online Q&A at G4.
Fans of Trevor Rabin (oh, you exist) might be interested to know that prior to joining YES and later becoming part of the Media Ventures family, the composer scored a South African crime film called Death of a Snowman [M]. Synapse released a DVD, and while there aren’t any extras (trailer excepted), Rabin and his co-composers showed an adeptness at giving a really odd gangster thriller a solid prog-rock score that unfortunately isn’t available on CD (and should be).
Other horfascifi scores I recently covered at KQEK.com include Andrew Hewitt’s Cuckoo [M], John Morris’ Haunted Honeymoon [M], Christopher Young’s Haunted Summer [M], and the Les Baxter biker / sexploitation quickie for AIP, Hell’s Belles.
Lastly, I’ve added a new label to the roster below.
Finders Keepers is another indie label that’s taken the hand-crafted approach to a new level. I’d suggest checking out their website, as they’ve thus far released a wide array of trippy sixties and seventies music with an international scope.
Most important factoid: they’ve released a number of scores to Jean Rollin films on LP, CD, and some as MP3s.

An official welcome to The Abattoir, Mark! For the record, I actually *like* Brussels sprouts and have eaten them ever since I was a kid. Had I known they may have been contributing to the root of my evil, I may have even doubled up on the portions. Clearly my little sister was in need of no such supplement to enhance her god-given aura of diabolic worthlessness.
